History

Our story began in 1924 when Frank Wilkins and his son, Babe started a mobile logging and milling operation on and around Hayden pass near the town of Coaldale, CO

Our mill is an American Saw Mill Machinery Co. Model No. 1 built in 1927 and cuts rough sawn lumber up to 20 ft in length.

Babe’s sons, Floyd and Lloyd Wilkins, worked for their father and took over the mill in 1950.

Floyd & Lloyd both put down roots in Salida, and moved the mill to its current, stationary location just east of town that same year.

Floyd’s Son, Donald Wilkins also worked for his father and took over the mill in 1986.

In August 2012 Gregg & Aubrey Wilkins purchased the mill. Donald and his son Gregg Wilkins are the 4th & 5th generation millers carrying on a proud family tradition.

Today Wilkins Lumber is continuing to expand. In order to keep up with demand, we have purchased a more modern circle sawmill. There's nothing like a global pandemic to arise as we begin sawing on our new mill. We are excited to be making sawdust again. Please stop by or call us so we can help you with your next project.
